The German research ship Polarstern is currently making a very special journey. It is drifting through the Arctic Ocean trapped in sea ice. The goal is to collect data about the Arctic winter and gain fundamental insights into global warming.
"On a ship frozen in the Arctic, scientists have spent all winter to shed light on exactly how the world is changing"
"Taking its blueprint from Fridtjof Nansen’s ‘Arctic drift’ mission 130 years ago, a new quest for science ventures farther north in winter than ever before."

Interview with sea ice researcher Polona Itkin of UiT, The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø
"Tutkijat viettivät kuukausia eristyksissä keskellä jäätä ja pimeyttä – ”Jääkarhut repivät telttoja ja purivat kaapeleita”, kertoo maailman suurimmalle naparetkelle osallistunut professori Jari Haapala"
"Arctic ice is disappearing — the question is how fast."
"For ships sailing close to the north pole, few events pose bigger risks than an Arctic storm."
