The goal of the EFICA project in Team ECO (Ecosystem Team) is to explore if there are any fish stocks under the sea ice in the mesopelagic zone of the water column (ca. 300-600 m of depth), and - if so - how large these fish stocks might be and what ecological role the fish would have in the pelagic food web of the Central Arctic Ocean. The data we collect during MOSAiC are: hydroacoustic data (echosounder) for a whole year, video films (underwater camera system at a depth of 375 m), fish samples (long lines and gill nets), and bioinformatics data (searching for fish genes in DNA from water samples).
