Reports on expeditions of RV Polarstern are documented in AWI's web based OA serial publication "Berichte zur Polar- und Meeresforschung = Reports on Polar and Marine Research". The expedition reports document the scientists' work onboard Polarstern during an expedition. They are created under the editorial authorship of the chief scientists with contributions of the expedition participants.
The reports contain information about measurements and scientific activities during the entire expedition and are fundamental to understand by whom, when and how specific datasets were collected.
Each Polarstern cruise leg has its own unique expedition number. The MOSAiC expedition number is PS122. Furthermore, MOSAiC was divided into 5 cruise legs (numbered /1-5), resulting in 5 cruise reports. PREPRINTS (author's versions) of these reports are publicly available via the links below.
An important part of MOSAiC was the Distributed Network of instrumentations around the MOSAiC Central Observatory. The Distributed Network was set up by the Russian ice breaker AKADEMIK FEDOROV. This expedition has the expedition number AF122/1 and the corresponding cruise report is linked below as well.

The MOSAiC expedition was realized after many years of complex planning and various meetings. In July 2015 in Potsdam, the vision of how associated observational, modeling, synthesis, and programmatic objectives can be manifested was written down in the first draft of the MOSAiC Implementation Plan. It was further developed during two additional workshops at AWI Potsdam in December 2015 and February 2016. This document provides a framework for planning the logistics of the project, developing scientific observing teams, organizing scientific contributions, coordinating the use of resources, and ensuring MOSAiC’s legacy of data and products.
Based on the MOSAiC Implementation Plan, the PS122 Expedition Programme was developed. This document contains the information how the expedition should be implemented logistically, scientifically and temporally in detail. It is an important planning tool, although deviations due to unforeseen developments, such as the pandemic were widespread. The actual expedition progress is therefore documented in the MOSAiC Cruise Reports described above.
The final MOSAiC Implementation Plan and the PS122 Expedition Programme are linked below.
The Expedition Programme provides information about the goals and scientific work programmes.
